About Us

Our home is HeartsEase Farm, located on about 100 acres on the western edge of the beautiful Finger Lakes area in upstate New York, about an hour south of Rochester.

Every morning we look to the east and enjoy the lovely valley that spreads out below the farm where there's plenty of space for us and for our Deerhounds.

Many years ago and far away, Dhu Mohr was given its start by Anna Curran who owned and bred the Blythblue Deerhounds in Minnsesota.  Although our first Deerhound was never bred, she gave birth to a love affair with the breed that has lasted over 45 years.

During our time with Deerhounds, we’ve competed in conformation, lure coursing, and obedience.  We’ve lost count of the number of champions we’ve made up, but two show wins that stand out in our memories are the two times we’ve won Best of Breed at our national specialty shows.

The first occurred in 1979, when a British judge we’d never seen before awarded our Dhougal (Ch. Dhu Mohr Dhougal the Fast) the top honor, and then went on to give his children Winners Dog, Reserve Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, Reserve Winners Bitch, Best of Winners, and Best Opposite Sex!  To say we were “over the moon” is an understatement.  We don’t think that’s ever happened before, and we know it hasn’t happened since.  It was truly an incredible experience.

The second happened in 1998, when our Hattie (Ch. Dhu Mohr Elena Tess Algonkian, co owned with Ron and Priscilla Irwin) stepped up to the plate and walked away with the honors.

And the third happened May 2, 2015, when our Flyer (Ch. Dhu Mohr Gentom On Wings of Peace won Best in Specialty—click here to read more.

But our life with the Deerhounds is much more than just showing and performance.  It is a rich and rewarding experience that has taught us about gentle spirits and loyalty and unconditional love.  Our dogs are all family members who live in our home and share their lives with us.  Our life with them is about walks in the hills and woods and heads in our laps and just the steady security of knowing they’re always there for us, willing to share in our joys and support us in our sorrows.

Our puppies are very special to us.  They are our contribution to the breed that has given us so much over the years.  To see  how we raise our puppies, look at our Puppies  page.

In 2011, we wrote to Tom and Jean Rhodes of Gentom Deerhounds to ask if we might include their beautiful Eng. Ch. Gentom Peacemaker in our breeding program, and they kindly agreed.  At that point, we entered into a partnership with two of the most amazing people in Deerhounds, and everything that we’ve owned since then that traces back to Peacemaker has been co-owned and co-bred with them.  You’ll see, if you read on, that our working together has produced some amazing hounds!
